In the controversial Egypt vs. Argentina 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match, the referee did go to the pitch-side monitor to disallow Egypt's second goal, but did not check the screen for Argentina's late winner. This inconsistency sparked immense backlash and allegations of bias. [1, 2, 3]
Here is why the VAR process functioned differently for those two critical moments:
Why the referee checked the screen (Egypt's Disallowed Goal)The Incident: Mostafa Ziko scored to put Egypt up 2-0, but VAR intervened. The VAR team identified a potential foul (a stepped foot/toe) by an Egyptian player at the opposite end of the pitch in the build-up phase. [1, 2, 3]Why he went to the monitor: Foul identification is subjective. Because the referee originally missed the contact due to distance and angle, VAR could not just make the factual call. The referee was called to the screen to judge for himself whether the contact constituted a "clear and obvious error" in the Attacking Possession Phase (APP). He deemed it a foul and disallowed the goal. [1, 2]
Why the referee DID NOT check the screen (Argentina's 3-2 Winner)The Incident: In the 92nd minute, Enzo Fernández scored the winning header for Argentina. In the immediate buildup, Egyptian players and coach Hossam Hassan loudly claimed that Alexis Mac Allister committed a foul to win possession. [1, 2, 3]Why he didn't go to the monitor: The VAR team checks every single goal in the background automatically. In this instance, the VAR room determined that the challenge by Mac Allister was clean or did not meet the high threshold of a "clear and obvious error". Because the VAR room did not flag it as a blatant mistake, they gave the referee a standard "check complete" audio confirmation. By protocol, a referee is not allowed to check the monitor unless the VAR team actively recommends a review.
