Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as CZ, is a Canadian businessman. Zhao is the co-founder and former CEO of Binance. According to Forbes, Zhao is the richest Canadian and the 21st-richest person in the world, with a net worth estimated at $88.0 billion as of October 2025.
Resignation and Plea:
Zhao resigned as CEO of the crypto exchange Binance in November 2023 after the U.S. Department of Justice found him and his company in violation of anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. He pleaded guilty to enabling money laundering at Binance.
Prison Sentence:
In April 2024, Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison. He completed his sentence by September 2024.

Identity: Zhi Dong Zhang, a Chinese citizen, also used aliases such as "Pancho" and "HeHe".
Accusations: U.S. prosecutors accuse him of masterminding a vast international network for fentanyl and cocaine trafficking and money laundering. He allegedly worked closely with Mexico's powerful Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartels.
Operations: His organization is accused of moving large quantities of drugs, including more than 1,000 kilos of cocaine and nearly 2,000 kilos of fentanyl, into the U.S.. He allegedly laundered millions of dollars in drug money using a network of over 100 shell companies and bank accounts in the U.S. and China.
Initial Arrest and Escape: Zhang was first arrested in Mexico City in October 2024, but a judge controversially granted him house arrest, from which he escaped in July 2025.
Recapture and Extradition: After his escape, he fled to Cuba, where he was detained by Cuban authorities on July 31, 2025. Following cooperation between Cuban, Mexican, and U.S. authorities, he was handed over to U.S. custody on October 23, 2025.
Current Status: He now faces drug trafficking and money laundering charges in federal court in the U.S., with the case being handled under an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation.
