How are they used in warfare?FPV drones are fitted with ammunition, turning them into kamikaze UAVs. A lot of interest in them arose after Ukrainian videos appeared on the web showing maneuverable high-speed drones which hit Russian armored vehicles.
What are the advantages of FPV drones?
The drones are small, maneuverable, well controlled - such devices can be launched literally "through the window", hitting the target in the most vulnerable place. The drone can attack not only equipment, but also enter a small hole in the strongest cover position. These drones are available on the commercial market, and enthusiasts can modify them for military needs: the process does not require high-tech equipment. They are also widespread, so they can be assembled en masse. They are relatively inexpensive: according to some reports, it costs 50,000 rubles to build a sample in a maximum configuration. It is difficult to intercept: unlike surveillance and reconnaissance drones, FPV drones operate on other frequencies. It is more difficult and more expensive to produce interception means for such UAVs.What are the disadvantages of FPV drones? They are difficult to operate, it requires weeks of intensive training. At the same time, even an inexperienced fighter can get the skills to fly a regular drone in a few days. Most FPV drone models on the market have tangible limitations on take-off weight. They can only take a certain ammunition like the RPG-7 grenade. This makes it difficult to defeat heavy armored vehicles. And controlling an overloaded UAV is difficult. FPV drones have a small range: it often does not exceed 3 km. The wide availability of products has a downside - the lack of unification. Dozens of different teams may be working on UAV customization, producing de facto unique products with their own features. This makes mass training of operators and combat use of drones difficult. Ammo for FPV drones is mainly designed to engage infantry by detonating explosives with an electric detonator, not to engage heavy equipment. The charge in standard RPG-7 grenades is changed to explosives with a detonator by radio link - this requires not only control skills, but also the ability to predict the hit.For sure, FPV drones cannot replace Lancet and other UAVs. But it is an effective weapon, which in the near future will become widely used by infantry units.
What shall be done? Do not get in the way of civilian enthusiasts from developing such UAVs. Create a team of enthusiasts to develop a unified standard of manufactured products. Create a single line of ammunition for FPV drones. The best variant is to fo that at the level of defense enterprises, but a document can also be drawn up to refine the already existing drones in the field.
