Summary: As of 10/6/22, a total of 71,490 healthcare workers and first responders have been confirmed with COVID-19 in Los Angeles
County—this is an additional 738 newly reported cases, as well as 135 older cases not previously included in this report and 136 new
presumed reinfections. This report includes all healthcare workers and first responders who live and/or work in Los Angeles County.
Cases have reported symptom onset dates starting in February 2020, with a decline mid-July until mid-September (Figure 1). Based on
symptom onset, it appears there was a small decline in mid-December before reaching a peak in early January; however, weekly
reported cases remained high until late January, signifying possible delays in testing (Figure 2) and/or reporting. Cases once more began
to rise in early June 2021 and continued to increase until peaking in August. More recently, cases once more began to rise in late
November 2021 and continued to increase until peaking at the start of 2022. Demographics show two-thirds of cases were women
(64%), nearly half were between 30 and 49 years old (48%), and over half were of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (44%) (Table 1).
Nurses (including RN, LVN, and CNA) also continue to account for the majority of overall (26%) and weekly cases (34%) (Table 2). There
has been a total of 338 COVID-19 related deaths in healthcare workers/first responders. The majority were men (54%), between 50
and 64 years old (48%), Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish (47%), and had a known co-morbidity (78%) (Table 3). Nurses (24%) continue to
account for the most deaths (Table 4). Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 4,487 presumed reinfections among
healthcare workers and first responders in LA County. All data in this report was obtained from case interviews, death report forms,
and/or emailed reports directly from facilities or from outside jurisdictions if the worker resides outside but works in LA County. Due
to a shift in the interviewing process, there may be less reporting of HCW cases following April 2022.
