Politico: Biden against Macron's proposal to send military trainers to Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden "expressed concern" to French President Emmanuel Macron about his proposal to send Western military trainers to Ukraine, Politico reported on June 6.

News emerged at the end of May that France could soon send its military trainers to Ukraine, after Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that he had already signed documents "that will allow the first French instructors to visit training centers soon."

France is yet to officially confirm the plans, with the French Defense Ministry telling Reuters on May 27 that the topic is still being discussed.

Citing "two people familiar with the conversation," Politico said that Biden and Macron spoke about the proposal on a recent phone call.

"Biden was not supportive" and expressed "concern about the potential consequences of sending troops from any NATO country into a place where they could wind up in the line of fire and lead to an escalation of the conflict," Politico said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on June 4 that the presence of French military instructors in Ukraine would be deemed a "legitimate target" for Russia's Armed Forces.

The call ended without Biden and Macron resolving the matter, according to Politico.

Politico reported that another point of disagreement between the two leaders is Washington's proposal to provide Kyiv with a $50 billion loan that would be repaid by profits from frozen Russian assets.

The plan is contingent on the EU agreeing to extend sanctions against Russia until it ends the war, the Financial Times reported on June 5. Currently, EU sanctions against Russia require an extension every six months, unless renewed by unanimous consent.

"Macron is the key remaining holdout among Group of Seven (G7) leaders" on the plan, Politico said, citing two Biden administration officials.

Despite their disagreements, Politico said that the relationship between Biden and Macron is "solid."

From May 16 to 22, 2024, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own all-Ukrainian public opinion survey "Omnibus", to which questions were added about the 5th anniversary of President V. Zelensky, commissioned by the non-governmental organization Center for Strategic Communications "Forum". 1,002 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (territory under the control of the Government of Ukraine) were interviewed by the method of computer - assisted telephone interviews (CATI) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers (with random generation of phone numbers and subsequent statistical weighting).

18% of respondents answered that V. Zelensky fulfilled most or all of his promises (5% of them say that all promises were fulfilled). Almost as many believe that he has fulfilled about half of the promises, while 50% believe that he has fulfilled few or none of the promises (of these, 25% believe that he has fulfilled none of the promises).

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claimed on June 7 that his country had increased ammunition production by more than 20 times, and there is "no need" to use nuclear weapons to win in Ukraine.

When asked if Russia should hold a "nuclear pistol to the temple" of the West over Ukraine, Putin dismissed the idea except in an "exceptional case."

"The use (of nuclear weapons) is possible in an exceptional case - in the event of a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. I don't think that such a case has come," he said. "There is no such need."

The claim that Russia had raised ammunition production by 20 times could not be independently verified, but last month Sky News reported that Russia is managing to produce artillery shells at triple the speed of Ukraine’s allies for a quarter of the price.

According to the report, Russian factories can produce or refurbish 4.5 million 152 mm shells this year for $1,000 per round.

European countries and the U.S. are only expected to produce 1.3 million 155 mm shells combined, at an average cost of $4,000 per unit.

AFP: Still no G7 consensus over using frozen Russian assets for Ukraine
G7 leaders have still not reached a consensus on a deal to use profits from Russian assets to help Ukraine, AFP reported on June 7.

Ukraine's Western partners and other allies froze around $300 billion in Russian assets at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Roughly two-thirds are held in the Belgium-based financial services company Euroclear.

While the U.S. proposed seizing Russian assets outright in accordance with their recently passed REPO act, the EU has been more hesitant, fearing legal and fiscal pitfalls of confiscation.

Instead, Brussels seeks to use windfall profits generated by the frozen assets and funnel them to Kyiv.

According to AFP, the U.S. is pushing the G7 to endorse a loan for Ukraine of up to $50 billion, secured by interest on the frozen assets.

But questions remain on issues such as what would happen if the assets were unfrozen in the event of a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
