现在的车已经开了十二年了，Check engine light亮了，dealer说要换Catalyst convertor。
把我车卖了都不值这个修理费。现在研究下一辆车该买啥。
1. 要雪地安全
2. 要不太修
3. 要能开十年以上。
4. 不考虑新能源。

When the code is of [Catalyst convertor], you need to find out the reason of the Cat to fail.
1. The Cat is bad, other data are good, fuel trim, oxygen sensor, exhaust leaking, intake vacum leaking etc. You need to read the scanner data to check. if only the Cat is bad, then change Cat will solve your problem. However if you are living in the state which does not do inspection, driving a car with a bad Cat does not hurt anything but the enviroment. Bad Cat does not 'clean' your exhaust, but in my iopinion, modern cars are already clean enough.
2. The Cat is good, other components (data) is bad, for example, oxygen sensor is bad, or there is an exhaust leak, then you need address you other problem.
3. The Cat is bad, also other component(s) are bad, like bad oxygen sensor. then you need to change out the bad component and also change out Cat.
Anyway, the problem ranges from simple to complex, if you are not very comfortable with fixing cars, you may buy an cheap scanner to read the data, or even go to the autopart store, let them read the code for you.
12 years Subaru without engin or tansmission problem is still worth to keep.
