https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/1870871350593671298
https://datahub.transportation.gov/stor ... 38mw-dp8u/
I dug into the data. Fiat Chrysler (FCA) was the most recalled automaker in the US in 2024, while
Tesla was one of the least. Tesla's over-the-air (OTA) software update recalls in the US affected 5,096,386 vehicles (many vehicles received multiple OTA recalls, so they are counted more than once.) In contrast, Tesla's physical recalls—requiring a visit to a service center—affected only 39,311 vehicles, accounting for just 0.77% of the total.
Total recalls (including physical & software update recalls):
• FCA: 72
• Ford: 62
• BMW: 36
• GM: 33
• Mercedes: 27
• Hyundai: 25
• Jaguar Land Rover (JLR): 20
• Kia: 19
• Honda: 18
• VW: 18
• Nissan: 17
• Toyota: 16
• Tesla: 15
• Mazda: 8
• Rivian: 6
• Lucid: 5
• Volvo: 4
The number of physical recalls each automaker had that required customers to visit a service center:
• FCA: 72
• Ford: 62
• BMW: 36
• GM: 33
• Mercedes: 27
• Hyundai: 24
• Jaguar Land Rover (JLR): 20
• Kia: 19
• Honda: 18
• VW: 18
• Toyota: 16
• Nissan: 16
• Mazda: 8
• Tesla: 7
• Rivian: 4
• Volvo: 4
• Lucid: 2
The number of over-the-air software update recalls each automaker had that not require any service center visits:
• Tesla: 8
• Lucid: 3
• Hyundai: 1
• Rivian: 1
• Nissan: 1
• BMW: 0
• Toyota: 0
• FCA: 0
• Ford: 0
• GM: 0
• Mercedes: 0
• JLR: 0
• Kia: 0
• Honda: 0
• VW: 0
• Mazda: 0
• Volvo: 0
Out of the 401 total recalls, including both physical and software updates, only 14 were remedied with over-the-air software updates. Tesla accounted for 57% of all OTA recalls.
The mainstream media has done an excellent job of convincing people that Teslas break all the time and or need fixing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The data above shows that not only does @Tesla
rank near the bottom in total recall count, but 99.23% of the Teslas that were recalled in the US were “fixed” with a simple over-the-air software update performed in the comfort of the owners’ homes or garages—no service center visit required.
Tesla makes the safest cars on the road (Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS). Their active safety features are great in preventing crashes, but if the worst happens, they have incredible passive safety engineering too.
