Australia has made significant strides in producing heavy rare earths. Lynas Rare Earths, an Australian company, became the first commercial producer of heavy rare earths outside China, achieving this milestone with the production of dysprosium oxide at its facility in Malaysia in May 2025. The company is also on track to start producing terbium as early as June 2025. This development marks a major step in diversifying the global supply chain for heavy rare earths, which are critical for high-performance magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other technologies. Lynas sources its ore from the Mt Weld mine in Western Australia and processes it in Malaysia, with additional processing capabilities in Kalgoorlie, Australia
Lynas sources its rare earths from its Mt Weld mine in Australia, and while the final refining of some HREEs has occurred in Malaysia, the process is driven by Australian resources and expertise. The company has also secured contracts, including a $120 million deal with the U.S. Department of Defense, to establish HREE separation facilities in Texas, further reducing reliance on Chinese supply chains.
Another Australian company, Australian Strategic Materials (ASM), operates a critical metals facility in South Korea, which produces rare earth metals and alloys. Following China’s export restrictions in April 2025, ASM reported increased global interest in its non-Chinese supply chain
