The Wealth Report—How Many Americans Have A Net Worth Of $1Million, $5Million, $10 Million and More
Wealth distribution in the United States remains a topic of fascination. There are many people who aspire to join the ranks of millionaires and beyond. The number of Americans achieving various net worth milestones—$1 million, $5 million, $10 million, $20 million, $50 million, and $100 million—offers insight into the concentration of wealth and the economic dynamics shaping the nation.
The journey to a $1 million net worth is a significant milestone. It’s often viewed as a marker of financial success. According to 2023 estimates from the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report and other sources, approximately 23.7 million U.S. households, or about 18.04% of all households, have a net worth of $1 million or more.
This figure includes the value of primary residences, reflecting the substantial role home equity plays in wealth accumulation for many Americans. The threshold to join this group is around $1.22 million, as noted by the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, placing these households in the top 10% of wealth holders. New Jersey leads the nation with the highest proportion of millionaire households at 9.76%, or roughly 246,058 households, driven by its proximity to high-income areas like New York City.
Reaching a $5 million net worth narrows the field significantly. Approximately 4.8 million households, or 3.68% of U.S. households, boast a net worth of $5 million or more. This group represents a subset of the top 5%, where the threshold is around $1.03 million.
Climbing to $5 million requires substantial assets beyond a primary home. This cohort has investments in stocks, real estate, or business ownership. The data suggests that only about 17% of those who reach $1 million go on to achieve $5 million, highlighting the increasing difficulty of scaling wealth at these levels. Factors like disciplined investing, entrepreneurship, or high-income careers in finance, tech, or law often propel individuals into this bracket.
A $10 million net worth places households in an even more exclusive category, with around 2.13 million households, or 1.62% of the total, meeting this benchmark. This level is just shy of the top 1%, which requires a net worth of approximately $13.7 million.
The $10 million mark is often cited as a target for comfortable retirement, capable of generating $300,000 to $500,000 in low-risk annual income. Many in this group are early employees of successful startups, C-suite executives, or real estate investors, particularly in high-cost cities like San Francisco or New York. For context, $10 million in New York City may feel equivalent to $30 million in a lower-cost area like Des Moines, Iowa, due to cost-of-living disparities.

Approximately 3,170 American taxpayers paid federal estate tax in the 2022 tax year (占死亡人口的0.1%)
