Prof Zhang Yonghang's Letter

From: Xuerong Zhang <xzhang@asu.edu>

Dear colleagues, friends, and students,

As you may know, there was a tragic accident Monday morning (10/6) on the
campus at ASU. One of our students lost his life in this unfortunate
bus/bike collision. I was completely shocked when I was informed that the
student involved happened to be my PhD student Mr. Aiqing Jiang, a top
graduate from the very best Chinese engineering school, Tsinghua
University, Beijing. To make me feel even worse is that he was recruited
by myself last year while I was attending an international conference in
Beijing. Although he had been with me for less than two months at ASU, he
had demonstrated very solid background in optoelectronics and picked up on
the research project very quickly. He was also one of the smartest
students in my EEE631 class and could easily answer many difficult
questions. He could have become the best student in my group. I simply
cannot believe that he is gone. His death is a tremendous loss to his
family and to our community.

Aiqing came from an average Chinese family. His father died in a tragic
accident when he was only 8-year old. His mother has been a single
parent, raising Aiqing and his brother alone. She is in a very poor health
with severe heart disease. From an early age, Aiqing was extremely bright,
always at top as the No. 1 or 2 student in academic performance in the
whole schools all the way from elementary school through high school. He
was one of the top ten winners in both provincial Middle School Math and
Physics Competitions. He passed the most competitive national university
entrance exams with extremely high scores and was admitted to the
accomplished Electrical Engineering Department at the most prestigious
engineering school in China, Tsinghua University, in 1989. Based upon his
outstanding achievements in his undergraduate courses, he we admitted into
the MS program as a honor student without the need to pass any entrance
exams. His MS thesis received the highest mark from his supervisor. He
had dreamed of becoming a scientist like many other bright youth in China.
He had planned to go back to Tsinghua to teach and conduct research in
optoelectronics after his PhD. He had chosen my group and ASU among
variety of offers from other schools. He believed that ASU has the
credentials and resources to help make his dream to come true. I feel it
was such a great honor for me, as well as for ASU, to have had him as our
PhD student. However, this accident took his life and I cannot help to
feel the deepest sorrow for him and his family.

The more I talked with his friends and his previous MS degree supervisor
in China, the more I am deeply moved by his distinct personality. I feel
so sorry that his life was cut short and I did not have more time to get
to know him. He was such a great student when he was at Tsinghua. During
his undergraduate and graduate years, he was consistently among the top 5%
of his class. Due to his outstanding academic performance, he was awarded
the Guan Hua Fellowship, the only one out of a class of 35. In order to
relieve some financial pressure on his family for the support of his
higher education, he took several summer jobs. During the semesters, he
actively participated in various types of volunteer work helping elderly
people in retirement homes routinely, providing free mentor services to
junior students, and donating blood. It was a very emotional experience
for me to organize his personal belongings, especially when I saw a
certificate of free blood donation and many other pictures of him. He was
so highly respected at his previous university that just a few hours after
I called his previous supervisor's office at Tsinghua and informed them of
the tragic accident, the students and faculty members started to post
heart breaking memorial articles on the Tsinghua University BBS on their
computer network. They are all shocked and simply cannot believe what has
happened.

In order to send Aiqing to Arizona, his family had to use their entire
saving and borrow the remaining funds. The total cost of his trip to ASU
was about $9K US dollars, equivalent to a sum of eight- to ten-year net
income of an average worker in the city where he grew up! A large portion
of these funds went to the Chinese government because of a new law
requiring that a large fee be paid if the MS student decides not to work
in China after his graduation. The International Student Office and the
College of Engineering and Applied Science at ASU has helped to set up an
account with the ASU Foundation. Checks can be sent to: Jiang Memorial
Fund, ASU Foundation, PO Box: 875005, Tempe, AZ 85287-5005, Tel:
602-965-2825. My wife and I decided to donate $500 to his family. I am
inviting you to join us in donating to Aiqing's family. Checks can be also
dropped off in the Engineering Development Office in Engineering G-Wing or
ERC-140. No amount of money can make up for the loss of Aiqing's family,
but it is one way we can show that we care. Our donations can help to
alleviate some of the financial burden that has been placed on his family.

Even if you did not know Aiqing I am sure his death effected you in some
way. Please stop by and sing his condolence book in ERC 115. The book
along with any flowers left at the site of the accident will be sent to
his family.

Lastly, I would like to thank the faculty, staff, and students for their
help, donations and expressions of condolences to Aiqing. His family will
greatly appreciate these!

PS: For Chinese friends. You can also send you check to:

To those people who know Aiqing, I encourage you to send your donations to

small checks are worth more than just a big one. The address for his
