虽说F1签证规定不许工作，但是这个“工作”其实很难界定。比如如果开车捎朋友一段路然后朋友觉得不好意思给我点油钱，这算不算工作了呢？还有比如租房子帮房东剪草房东给我抵扣房租，这算不算工作呢？实际上一个比较common的界定就是不能签劳动合同，所以实际上F1学生在餐馆之类的地方打短工并不违反这规定的。
实际上还有一大类情况，比如那些学金融之类专业的，学习里面肯定要做些project什么的，而那些project会涉及到啥？创业炒股什么的，难道这个也算工作么？还有比如上学期间买个房子投资的，这算工作么？从这些情况看，上学期间创业本身就是个很正当的行为。
