China explores ways to make own AI memory chips despite US sanctions
China is exploring ways to produce its own high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the next-generation of memory chips tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) processors, as it pushes ahead with a semiconductor self-sufficiency drive amid US sanctions.
SCMP sources said China’s top dynamic random access memory (DRAM) maker, ChangXin Memory Technologies, is the country’s best hope for HBMs, but it may take up to four years to bring products to the market.
Industry insiders said that despite their high performance, the production of HMB chips does not necessarily require cutting-edge lithography technology such as extreme ultraviolet tools, making it possible for China to produce its own versions even without the latest equipment
India lodges strong protest with China over map claiming 'India's territory'
India said that it had lodged a strong protest with China over a new map that lays claim to India's territory.
The protest by New Delhi followed reports in the Indian media that Beijing had released an official "standard map" showing the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin plateau as its official territory.
China claims Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalayas to be a part of southern Tibet. Aksai Chin is a disputed plateau in the western Himalayas claimed by India but controlled by China.

Malaysia protests China's map
Malaysia became the first country in ASEAN whose diplomats officially protested against the map published by China. In addition to Kuala Lumpur, representatives of India and Taiwan expressed their dissatisfaction.
The statement mentions that Malaysia does not recognize the boundaries in the South China Sea indicated in the new map. Malaysians refer to their map from 1979, on which the disputed territory is in the possession of the state.
It is also mentioned that Malaysia, as always, is ready to work on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. Negotiations on the matter have going on for for several years now, but the sides haven’t reached any progress, mainly because of China’s position.

Biden approves military aid to Taiwan under program normally used for sovereign states
US President Joe Biden's administration has approved a military transfer to Taiwan under the Foreign Military Financing, or FMF, program normally used for sovereign states, according to a notification sent to Congress.
The notification informs congressional committees of the State Department's intention to obligate up to $80 million in FMF funds in support of Taiwan.
FMF, the largest military assistance account managed by the State Department, provides primarily grant assistance to foreign governments for the purchase of US defense equipment and military training under the Foreign Military Sales program.

US military in talks to develop port in Philippines facing Taiwan
The US military is in talks to develop a civilian port in the remote northernmost islands of the Philippines, a move that would boost American access to strategically located islands facing Taiwan.
US military involvement in the proposed port in the Batanes islands, less than 200 km from Taiwan, could stoke tensions at a time of growing friction with China.
The Bashi Channel between those islands and Taiwan is considered a choke point for vessels moving between the western Pacific and the contested South China Sea and a key waterway in the case of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
