Lieber's trial opened on December 14, 2021, in Boston with jury selection. He pleaded not guilty to all six felony charges.[75][76][77] On December 21, 2021, Lieber was found guilty on two counts of making false statements to the U.S. government, two counts of filing a false income tax return, and two counts of failing to report foreign bank accounts.[78] In a taped interview, Lieber admitted traveling from Wuhan to Boston with bags of cash containing between $50,000 and $100,000, which he said he never disclosed to the IRS.[13] He faces up to 26 years in prison and $1.2 million in fines. He will be sentenced on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
