His team's job was to think the way that Xi, the Politburo, or a senior Chinese general would, and then tell us the unvarnished strengths, weaknesses, pros, and cons of every critical policy, strategy, and plan we discussed. I relied on this team for their honest assessments and called upon them at nearly every meeting. I routinely received highly-classified memos from the Red Team on important technical, strategic, operational, or organizational matters. They involved themselves in all manner of China-related discussions and meetings.
