2x4事实上是1.5x3.5
2x6是1.5x5.5
但是
2x8却是1.5x7.25不是1.5x7.5
尼玛

记得哪里看过这个的解释。2x4等不应该看作是尺寸。应该看为商标品种等等。
历史上2x4等的确是尺寸。各种building code等要求多少2x4（如间隔16英寸一根）。后来发现over kill了，可以做小一点。但code就不用改了，还是（如16英寸一根新的）2x4。

官方的解释就是刚开始是粗切尺寸是2x4, 后期木材干燥并抛光，两个方向少了半寸，事实上木材厂几十年前决定将木材切割得更小以便于从原木中获得更多的stud，当然这也获得了结构师的认可，1.5x3.5在结构验算中完全满足要求，所以更理直气壮的缩水，但是在stud高度上绝不缩水，stud高8',实际尺寸就是8'。
事实上消费者也没吃亏，因为结构师计算的时候本身对结构构件就留有余量，这一点不用担心，而且在建筑外轮廓尺寸相同的情况下，缩小半寸能获得更大的使用面积。

随意也谈不上，这东西肯定有nationwide standard，不是说每个厂家自己决定尺寸。
“偷工减料”，是有那么点意思，浸泡缩水，可以是理由，但完全可以切大一点以保证缩水后保持2 by 4。比如2 by 4，基本上小一点 1.5 by 3.5 也能用了，不影响安全问题。美国木材资源丰富，“偷工减料”对于原始木材省不了多少钱。有时候可能成本的大头并不在木头本身，我觉得运输成本很贵，这东西笨重体积大，弄小一点估计能省不少运输成本。
