https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/dec ... washington

His wife Martha wanted to seek help but Washington was more concerned about her health as she had only recently recovered from a cold herself. Washington simply did not want her leaving the fire-warmed bedroom for the damp, cold outside. Nevertheless, Martha asked her husband’s chief aide, Col. Tobias Lear, to come into the room. Seeing how ill the general was, Col. Tobias immediately sent for Dr. James Craik, who had been Washington’s physician for more than 40 years, and the estate’s overseer, George Rawlins, who was well practiced in the art of bloodletting.

At 7:30 a.m., Rawlins removed 12 to 14 ounces of blood, after which Washington requested that he remove still more. Following the procedure, Col. Lear gave the patient a tonic of molasses, butter and vinegar, which nearly choked Washington to death, so inflamed were the beefy-red tissues of his infected throat.

Dr. Craik entered Washington’s bedchamber at 9 a.m. After taking the medical history, he applied a painful “blister of cantharides,” better known as “Spanish fly,” to Washington’s throat. The idea behind this tortuous treatment was based on a humoral notion of medicine dating back to antiquity called “counter-irritation.” The blisters raised by this toxic stuff would supposedly draw out the deadly humors causing the General’s throat inflammation.

At 9:30 a.m., another bloodletting of 18 ounces was performed followed by a similar withdrawal at 11 a.m. At noon, an enema was administered. Attempts at gargling with a sage tea, laced with vinegar were unsuccessful but Washington was still strong enough to walk about his bedroom for a bit and to sit upright in an easy chair for a few hours. His real challenge was breathing once he returned to lying flat on his back in bed.

Dr. Craik ordered another bleeding. This time, 32 ounces were removed even though Elisha Cullen Dick, the second physician to arrive at Mount Vernon, objected to such a heroic measure. A third doctor, Gustavus Richard Brown, made it to the mansion at 4 p.m. He suggested a dose of calomel (mercurous chloride) and a tartar emetic (antimony potassium tartrate), guaranteed to make the former president vomit with a vengeance.

Back in 1799, Washington’s physicians justified the removal of more than 80 ounces of his blood (2.365 liters or 40 percent of his total blood volume) over a 12-hour period

On December 12, 1799, George Washington spent the day riding around
in snow and sleet and returned home later than usual, soaking wet.
His guests had already arrived, so he decided not to change out of his wet clothes and sat down to dinner.
https://www.grunge.com/243167/george-wa ... explained/

According to CBS News, George Washington was still involved in the
country's affairs, and when he was asked to serve as Commander-in-
Chief of the army in 1798 as tensions grew with France, he accepted
— though his services were not needed in the end.

In 1798 alone he received almost 700 guests.

https://www.grunge.com/384127/heres-wha ... residents/

John Adams was one of the leading figures of the American Revolution and served as the first vice president of the United States under George Washington. In 1796, he ran for and very narrowly won the presidency against Thomas Jefferson. As told by the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia, the two Founding Fathers had a close friendship, although they had different political views. In 1800, the two ran against each other for the presidency again in a very dirty race. This time, Jefferson won.

The friendship was broken until 1811, when they reconciled in a long series of letters. This correspondence continued until, according to the Miller Center, Adams died at age 91 at 6:00 p.m. on July 4, 1826. His last words, uttered around noon, were, "Thomas Jefferson survives." Whether this meant that Adams regretted not outliving his rival Jefferson or if he wanted his old friend to outlast him is unknown. It is clear, however, that Adams certainly had Jefferson on his mind. What Adams did not know is that Jefferson died at 12:50 p.m. that same day.

According to the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia, on July 3, 1826, the former president had slept most of the day and woke up in the evening asking, "Is this the Fourth?" The physician, Robley Dunglison, replied, "It soon will be." Nicholas Trist, Jefferson's grandson by marriage, recorded a slightly different version in which Jefferson repeatedly asked if it was the Fourth, and finally, Trist nodded yes despite his misgivings. Later that night, Jefferson refused to take any more laudanum. However, he made it to July 4, passing away at 12:50 p.m. at age 83.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithson ... 180960457/

Hamilton urged New York Gov. John Jay to permit the state legislature to choose presidential electors to prevent Jefferson—“an atheist in religion and a fanatic in politics”—from becoming president. Jay refused.

https://ap.gilderlehrman.org/essay/pres ... and-change
Inspired by the prevailing sense of crisis (as well as by his sheer enjoyment of the political game), Burr pushed political innovation to an extreme. Anxieties were certainly at an extreme in the spring of 1800, for New York City was the most crucial contest of the campaign, capable of deciding the election. The challenge of the moment spurred Burr to new heights of political creativity. For example, he personalized his campaign to an extraordinary degree, purportedly compiling a roster with the name of every New York City voter, accompanied by a detailed description of his political leanings, temperament, and financial standing. His plan was to portion the list out to his cadre of young supporters, who would literally electioneer door-to-door; in the process, he was politically organizing the citizenry—not his goal, but the logical outcome.
Hamilton
Also, some elite politicians spent more time electioneering among voters than they had before; for example, both Burr and Hamilton pledged “to come forward, and address the people” during the course of the election.

Hamilton writing one last letter on the night before his duel with Aaron Burr, urging a friend to fight against the “Dismemberment of our Empire.”

Madison composing a memorandum entitled “Advice to My Country”

Alien and Sedition Acts

French Revolution Poster

https://www.amazon.in/Revolutionary-Ide ... 0691151725

https://www.hope-of-israel.org/scythianisraelites.html

viewtopic.php?p=2780854

viewtopic.php?t=374460

viewtopic.php?t=380572

viewtopic.php?t=390239

1796, when John Adams narrowly defeated Jefferson, the new president moved to squash opposition by making it a federal crime to criticize the president or his administration’s policies. Jefferson struck back in spades after toppling the unpopular Adams four years later, when Democratic-Republicans won control of both Congress and the presidency. “He fired half of all federal employees—the top half,” Randall explains. “He kept only the clerks and the customs agents, destroying the Federalist Party and making it impossible to rebuild.”

Hamilton
https://www.history.com/news/5-things-y ... r-hamilton
But there’s so much more to Hamilton’s legacy. While serving in the Treasury, Hamilton helped found the first national bank, the U.S. Mint and the Revenue Cutter Service, a tax collection bureau that would later become the U.S. Coast Guard. So deeply involved in the development of the Cutter Service was Hamilton that the original naval communication guidebook he devised was still in use in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton was shot and mortally wounded by Vice President Aaron Burr in one of the most famous duels in American history. Though this was Hamilton’s first—and last—duel, he was certainly no stranger to the practice. One of the most divisive and combative figures of his age, he had already been challenged to nearly a dozen duels during his life, but each time he had managed to avoid violence. His eldest son Philip, however, was not so lucky. In 1801, after witnessing a speech denouncing his father, 19-year-old Philip confronted New York lawyer George Eacker and demanded a retraction. When Eacker refused, a duel was set for November 20 in Weehawken, New Jersey. Eacker escaped unscathed, but Philip died an agonizing death the following day. The loss devastated the Hamilton family, and many historians believe it led to Hamilton’s own reluctance to fire directly at Aaron Burr during their legendary duel just three years later. Whatever his intentions, Hamilton missed his opponent but was promptly shot in the stomach; he died the next afternoon.
5. It took more than 200 years—and two moves—to finally establish a proper monument to Hamilton.
