Central NY dad pulled a knife on JV volleyball coach after his daughter was benched, police say

Skaneateles, N.Y. — A Central New York father menaced his daughter’s volleyball coach with a knife after the girl was benched Monday, troopers said.

Nicholas F. Griesmyer, 41, of Hastings, threatened the coach at the Central Square vs. Skaneateles girl’s junior varsity volleyball game Monday night at Skaneateles High School, according to court papers filed by the New York State Police.

Griesmyer was approached by Deanne McClellan, 46, the volleyball coach, to inform him that his daughter and others were benched due to “personality conflicts” with teammates, McClellan told state police in a statement.

“Griesmyer shook his head and appeared displeased, and I informed him that I was done dealing with the players’ drama,” McClellan said.

His daughter was one of six players benched because of the drama, she said.

He went back to his seat and McClellan told troopers she heard his daughter tell him, “It’s all right, it’s just one set.”

Griesmyer returned to McClellan. He lifted his shirt to show a pocketknife on his waist and opened it, holding it toward her, she said. There were four players, including his daughter, around at the time, she said.

McClellan asked if he was threatening her, she told troopers.

He laughed and responded, “No, this is just who I am,” she told troopers.

He then pocketed the knife and left the gym, she said. She went over to his daughter who was crying, she said.

McClellan told investigators she asked the daughter if her dad just threatened her with a knife and the daughter said, “Yep.” She asked his daughter if her dad had ever threatened her before and she said no, McClellan told police.

McClellan told police the blade was 2 to 3 inches long. Griesmyer pointed the blade directly at her and it was about 10 inches away from her, she told police.

One other coach and another player provided statements to troopers that they witnessed the incident.

After the game, McClellan called her athletic director, who told the superintendent of the Central Square school district. The school resource officer called 911 to report it a few days later, she said.

Griesmyer told troopers that the incident was meant as a joke.

He told troopers McClellan told him it would be one match and he responded “one match” back to her. Then he said it again in a joking way and pulled out a box cutter, he told troopers. He did not extend the blade of the knife, he told troopers.

“I did not mean for this verbal exchange to be threatening in any way,” he said. “Deanne and I have joked with each other in the past and this was meant to be a joke.”

After the incident, he received a letter from the superintendent banning him from school grounds, he said.

The letter was attached in court filings and says that Griesmyer cannot go on school grounds without first requesting permission from the assistant superintendent. The assistant superintendent can deny permission. If permission is granted, Griesmyer will have to be escorted while on school property, according to the letter.

Griesmyer told troopers that he sent an apology to the assistant superintendent.

In it, he apologizes and states he meant no harm and takes full responsibility.

“I totally understand what I did was wrong,” Griesmyer writes. “My actions have put my family and myself in a horrible situation that never should have happened. Not only have I embarrassed myself but have completely embarrassed my family.”

He also wrote that McClellan has been helpful to his daughter through hard times and that he is thankful for her.

“I understand the school’s stance on my actions, and will abide by the district’s decisions in this matter,” he wrote.

Griesmyer was arrested and charged Wednesday with second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, according to state police records.

Griesmyer told troopers he has not owned guns in several years and turned over some guns to his mother about 10 years ago. He did turn over the knife to troopers, according to his statement.

有时候孩子还好,会自己从中学到教训。家长有时候反而火上浇油,恶化事情。
