My husband is a chemistry professor at FSU (#2 university in our state and ranked #70 among national universities). Our son graduated from MIT in 2020, chemistry major.

Comparing the depth of the material taught and also the requirements to tests, home assignments, and labs - there is no comparison. Undergraduate classes at MIT have more material than graduate classes at FSU, and the level of difficulty of homework and exams is incomparable. The top students at FSU are as bright as MIT students and could do totally fine at MIT level, but FSU professors cannot teach their courses on the level that only the top students can reach. Their responsibility is to teach all students in class and make sure everybody is learning the core concepts, so the level of material and the pace of the course has to take into consideration the majority of students. The majority of MIT freshmen have 800 SAT Math 2 score, and it’s a lot different from a class with 600 score in general SAT math. The more academically prepared the students are when entering the college, the more they are able to learn and achieve. MIT is much harder than an average university because its students come better prepared and more motivated. They really push the limits. MIT experience is often referred to as “drinking from a fire hose”.

So true. 我孩子放假回来和她高中的在fsu的同学聊上的相同的课。说她同学的课更容易拿A。学的内容也少一些。
所以我的观点是: 让孩子去他们能去的最好的学校。不要为了省钱而去差些的学校。
