In December 2023, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin underwent surgery to treat prostate cancer. The procedure was successful, and his prognosis was reported as excellent. 

However, on January 1, 2024, Austin was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications from the surgery. He experienced severe pain, leading to his admission to the intensive care unit. During this period, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks assumed his duties. The hospitalization was not immediately disclosed to senior officials, including President Biden, which led to criticism regarding transparency. 

In February 2024, Austin was again admitted to Walter Reed for a bladder issue related to his previous surgery. He underwent a non-surgical procedure and was released after successful treatment. 

By May 2024, Austin had resumed his duties and participated in scheduled events, including Memorial Day activities. The Pentagon emphasized that his health issues did not affect his ability to perform his responsibilities.
