Queens, N.Y. — On Monday, April 14, 2025, at approximately 6:21 a.m., several civilian witnesses called 911 and reported that there was a male wearing black jeans, a burgundy shirt, a brown vest, and carrying a white bag, in the vicinity of 30th Avenue and 33rd Street, in possession of a knife. The male was later identified as 60-year-old King Wong. As a result of the calls to 911, Police Officer Acosta, Officer Tavarez, Officer Lamonica, and Officer Coissy responded to the vicinity of 30th Avenue and 33rd Street.
While en route to the location, Officer Coissy and Officer Lamonica were flagged down by a civilian witness who reported a person with a knife in the same area. The officers encountered Wong opposite of 30-05 31st Street, where Wong was standing in the middle of the street, brandishing a knife in his right hand, and speaking unintelligibly. The officers ordered Wong to drop the knife, however, Wong refused to do so. As a result, Officer Tavarez, followed shortly thereafter by Officer Coissy, each deployed their Conducted Electrical Weapons at Wong.
The Tasers, however, were ineffective and Wong began walking away while still brandishing the knife. Wong reached the sidewalk and the officers continued to order Wong to drop the knife. As a result, Officer Acosta discharged seven shots, Officer Coissy discharged two shots, and Officer Lamonica discharged 10 shots, from their service firearms, striking Wong. Wong was transported from the scene via ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced deceased.
