John McEnroe, who won seven Grand Slam titles during his glittering career before becoming an analyst, reacted to the news that a fellow great may be stepping back
John McEnroe has sounded off on speculation that Novak Djokovic may retire soon — and he thinks "the LeBron James of tennis" still has plenty of gas in the tank.
In quotes first recorded by Italian publication Corriere della Sera, McEnroe, who won seven singles Grand Slam titles himself, claimed that although Djokovic was getting older, he still held several advantages over two of his up-and-coming opponents.
He said: "It’s impossible not to admire him. I consider him the Lebron James of tennis. Due to his age, he struggles more and more to keep up with Carlos (Alcaraz) and Jannik’s pace, but he remains a prodigy, someone science should study.
“Why should he retire if he continues to be so competitive? He is still the best competitor against the top two, and he has two major advantages: his experience and the ability to recover from tough moments.”
