Khanh Trong Tran, 71, told Santa Rosa authorities that he had found his father-in-law unresponsive. The men lived on the same property in different residences.

Sy Van Nguyen, 94, was pronounced dead at the scene. “At that time, there were no signs of trauma or foul play, and his body was released to the family,” the sheriff’s office said.

On Friday, however, sheriff’s deputies said they “received evidence indicating the death was not natural, but instead an intentional killing.”

Tran was taken into custody and booked into the county jail on suspicion of murder.
