the U.S. Air Force released an investigation report on August 25th, revealing the cause of the F-35A fighter jet crash at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska in January of this year. The cause of the accident was a "serious incident" by ground crew members, which resulted in water entering the aircraft's hydraulic fluid. This caused the landing gear struts, which contain the hydraulic fluid, to freeze, preventing the nose landing gear from retracting properly during takeoff.
An Accident Investigation Board report released by the U.S. Air Force in August 2025 concluded that the F-35A fighter jet crash at Eielson Air Force Base in January was caused by water-contaminated hydraulic fluid freezing in the landing gear struts. This issue was directly tied to a "serious incident" of negligence by ground maintenance crews. 
Sequence of events leading to the crash
Water contamination: The investigation determined that water entered the hydraulic fluid, likely due to improper storage and handling of the fluid barrels by maintenance crews. Testing found that up to one-third of the hydraulic fluid in the landing gear struts was water.
Freezing malfunction: During a training sortie on January 28, the extremely cold Alaskan temperatures caused the contaminated hydraulic fluid in the landing gear struts to freeze.
Landing gear fails: The frozen fluid prevented the nose landing gear from retracting properly after takeoff, causing it to remain canted to the left.
Erroneous ground mode: During a 50-minute troubleshooting effort, the pilot conducted two "touch-and-go" landings to try and correct the issue. These attempts caused ice to form in the main landing gear struts, leading the jet's "Weight on Wheels" (WoW) sensors to incorrectly register that the aircraft was on the ground.
Jet becomes uncontrollable: The erroneous sensor reading caused the F-35's flight control system to switch to "on-ground" mode while still airborne, causing the aircraft to become uncontrollable.
Pilot ejects: The pilot, an experienced evaluator with over 500 hours in the F-35, ejected safely just before the jet crashed and was destroyed. 
Contributing factors and prior warning
Maintenance shortcomings: In addition to the improper storage of hazardous materials, the report cited a lack of adherence to maintenance procedures and insufficient oversight within the ground crew's hazardous materials program.
Failed troubleshooting: The Air Force found that the decision-making during the in-flight conference call with Lockheed Martin engineers contributed to the crash. The board suggested that if a 2024 maintenance alert about sensor issues in extreme cold had been referenced, a controlled ejection might have been advised sooner.
Similar incident: A different F-35 at the same base experienced a similar hydraulic icing malfunction just nine days after the crash but was able to land safely. Post-flight analysis confirmed water contamination was the cause in that case as well.
