China prepares satellite constellation to rival Elon Musk’s Starlink

China has launched its first communications satellite bearing an ultra-thin flexible solar wing as it tests technologies for the country’s planned 13 000-satellite broadband constellation in low Earth orbit to rival SpaceX’s Starlink.

Lingxi-03, developed by the Beijing-based start-up GalaxySpace, lifted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in central China on Sunday. It is equipped with a digital payload that can handle tens of gigabytes of data per second, and will verify technologies related to low-orbit broadband communications, active thermal control and stackable satellite release.

Meanwhile, there are more than 4 500 Starlink satellites in orbit and the number is planned to grow even more. Together with constellation plans proposed by China and other Western companies, the total number of satellites may easily surpass 60 000, making low Earth orbit much more crowded and potentially more dangerous.

China tells Myanmar to root out online scam groups

China has told Myanmar’s junta to “root out” online scam centers in its lawless borderlands that target Chinese citizens.

Criminal syndicates are accused of luring or kidnapping citizens of China and other countries to lawless enclaves along Myanmar’s northern and eastern borders and forcing them to work as online scammers.

Beijing’s Ambassador held “special negotiations” on Monday with the junta’s Foreign Minister on “combating crimes, including domestic communication frauds.” “The residue of communication fraud and online gambling in Myanmar should be rooted out,” he added.

US announces historic $345 million military aid package for Taiwan

The United States unveiled a Taiwan weapons aid package worth up to $345 million. The aid for the first time will come from existing US military stockpiles instead of purchases through the foreign military sales program.

The Pentagon has signaled for much of the year that it intended to prepare such a passage after Congress authorized $1 billion for military aid to be provided to Taiwan under what is known as a Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) which is used in providing Ukraine with military aid.

According to media, the aid package includes portable air defense systems, intelligence and surveillance capabilities, firearms and missiles.
