Chinese companies accounted for 31% of African infrastructure contracts valued at US$50 million or more in 2022, compared with 12% for Western firms, according to a new study.
It is worth to be noted that in the 1990s, about eight out of 10 contracts to build infrastructure in Africa were won by Western companies.
The study found that Chinese infrastructure projects in sub-Saharan Africa totaled US$155 billion over the past two years. By contrast, total US foreign direct investment in Africa came to US$44.8 billion in 2021.

China appears to be building an airstrip on a disputed South China Sea island
China appears to be constructing an airstrip on a disputed South China Sea island that is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan, according to satellite photos.
The work on Triton island in the Paracel group mirrors construction on seven human-made islands in the Spratly group to the east which have been equipped with airstrips, docks and military systems.
Satellite photos show construction on the airstrip first visible in early August. The runway, as currently laid out, would be more than 600 meters in length.

The US Commerce Department said it will impose preliminary anti-dumping duties on tin-plated steel imports from Canada, Germany and China.
The department said the highest preliminary anti-dumping duties of 122.5% will be imposed on tin mill steel imported from China, including the country's largest producer, Baoshan Iron and Steel.
A Commerce Department official told reporters that producers in Canada, Germany and China were found to be selling tin mill steel at prices below those in their home markets. China's rates were higher because a lack of cooperation from a major producer in the investigation led to an "adverse inference" determination.

US President Joe Biden will sign a strategic partnership agreement with Vietnam during a state visit to the Southeast Asian country in mid-September, Politico reported.
The agreement will allow for new bilateral collaboration that will boost Vietnam's efforts to develop its high technology sector in areas including semiconductor production and artificial intelligence.
Biden said earlier this month that he would be traveling to Vietnam "shortly" because the country wanted to elevate its relationship with the United States and become a major partner.

China is expanding its military and security engagement into West Africa, with Chinese state-owned defense conglomerate Norinco opened a sales office in Dakar, Senegal. Early this year, the company supplied Senegal with VN2 armored infantry fighting vehicles and other reconnaissance vehicles.
China North Industries Corporation, or Norinco, would use the new office to help expand its military procurement operations in the region, where China has vast economic interests, including in countries such as Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea.
According to some media reports, Norinco also aims to set up operations in Mali and Ivory Coast – countries where the Chinese military contractor already has market presence through the sale of arms.

The Central American Parliament on Monday voted to expel Taiwan after more than two decades as a permanent observer and replace it with China.
The six-nation parliament, known as Parlacen, met in the Nicaraguan capital Managua where local legislators proposed adding China. Taiwan's foreign ministry said it had decided to withdraw from Parlacen immediately in the interests of upholding "national dignity."
In a statement, Parlacen cited the United Nations' 1971 expulsion of Taiwan in favor of China, saying this deemed Taiwan to be a "province of mainland China, which disqualifies it from participating as an independent country".
Guatemala is the only Parlacen member that still recognizes Taiwan.

China will be working with Thailand and Laos to crack down on Myanmar-based cybercrime gangs that often target Chinese nationals.
This came days after Chinese public security ministry officials and their counterparts from Myanmar, Thailand and Laos met in Chiang Mai, where they launched a special cooperative mechanism to crack down on human trafficking related to cyber scams originating in Myanmar.
The multinational cooperation drive is the latest in China’s efforts to root out Myanmar-based gangs that frequently target Chinese nationals, luring them with investment ruses, or promises of love or jobs, and then detaining them and forcing them to work as online scammers.

Beijing seafood dealers shocked by total Japan import ban
Fish dealers at a Beijing market appear shocked after China banned all seafood imports from Japan in response to its release of treated radioactive water.
A fish dealer at the Beijing market said the company had mainly procured cultured tuna from southwestern Japan's Nagasaki Prefecture due partly to the neighboring country's stable supply, but now has to explore different sources such as Australia, New Zealand and Spain.
A female worker of a retailer selling Japanese sake and seasoning said she is worried that nobody would be willing to consume Japanese food in China.

Retailers in some parts of China ran out of salt as Japan's release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean prompted Chinese consumers to hoard the item.
Shoppers are concerned that the ocean discharge could contaminate seawater and affect salt production. Beijing municipal authorities called on citizens to refrain from panic buying, assuring that the city has sufficient supply.
Shortly after the devastating earthquake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima nuclear crisis in March 2011, Chinese consumers hoarded salt amid worries that the accident could compromise the safety of sea salt.

Tokyo has urged Beijing to “ensure the safety of Japanese residents in China” after a wave of telephone harassment targeting businesses in Japan sparked by the controversial discharge of Fukushima waste water.
Calls from China began flooding Japanese businesses from Thursday. Japanese businesses and groups, ranging from a concert hall in Tokyo to an aquarium in northern Iwate, reported that they had started receiving so many calls from Chinese speakers that they had difficulty conducting normal operations.
Fukushima city mayor Hiroshi Kohata said in a Facebook post that the city hall had received around 200 similar calls in two days, while local schools, restaurants and hotels also became targets.

India said that it had lodged a strong protest with China over a new map that lays claim to India's territory.
The protest by New Delhi followed reports in the Indian media that Beijing had released an official "standard map" showing the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin plateau as its official territory.
China claims Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalayas to be a part of southern Tibet. Aksai Chin is a disputed plateau in the western Himalayas claimed by India but controlled by China.

Japan threatened to take China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to seek a reversal of Beijing's ban on all of its seafood imports after the release of treated radioactive water.
Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that Japan would take "necessary action (on China's aquatic product ban) under various routes including the WTO framework".
Filing a WTO complaint might become an option if protesting to China through diplomatic routes is ineffective, Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi said separately.
