Dear PAUSD Community,
We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our Gunn High School students today. Our hearts go out to the family.
In these situations, Palo Alto Unified School District’s crisis intervention team is immediately activated to provide support to the family, students and staff. Districtwide there are therapists, psychologists and school counselors available to assist students. Gunn High School has three therapists, a wellness coordinator, and school counselors who are prepared to provide support for students during this challenging time. Lisa Romero is our district staff mental health specialist prepared to support our staff.
While it is only natural to question the circumstances that led to this, we are cooperating with local law enforcement as they continue their investigation. We remain sensitive to the privacy of those who are grieving.
Students often react in a variety of ways to a traumatic event such as this, even if they did not know the student well. We want to assure you that we are closely monitoring all students for signs of distress.
As a child processes this event, you may observe:
demonstrating sadness, fear and/or confusion;
acting out or becoming withdrawn;
exhibiting anger about death; and
having concern for their own safety.
Some ways you can support children include:
spending time with them and assuring their safety;
talking about this event in an age-appropriate context;
observing conversations, including text messages, they may be having with their peers;
having an open and honest discussion about feelings; and
encouraging writing, drawing, and journaling.
Additional Resources Available:
Behavioral Health Access and Crisis Line: 988 available 24/7.
Professional counselors will answer your call and help you through a crisis. Counselors offer a broad range of services, including crisis and suicide intervention, and referrals to appropriate mental health professionals or programs for face-to-face services. Assistance is available in Spanish and other languages, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-TALK (8255)
District Mental Health & Wellness website: https://www.pausd.org/student-supports/ ... /resources
We offer our sincere condolences and continued support to the PAUSD community.

RIP。
