The largest tree system on Earth is Pando, a clonal colony of quaking aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) located in Utah's Fishlake National Forest. It's not a single giant tree, but rather a vast network of interconnected trees, all genetically identical and sharing the same root system, making it one massive organism. Pando spans over 106 acres and is estimated to weigh around 13 million pounds.
Here's a more detailed look at Pando:
A single organism:
Pando is a clonal colony, meaning all the individual trees (or stems) are genetically identical and connected by a single, massive root system.
Massive size:
It covers over 106 acres, which is about 80 football fields, and weighs an estimated 13 million pounds.
Old and extensive:
The root system is believed to be at least 80,000 years old, and Pando's story is a testament to the power of clonal propagation and long-term survival.
Found in Utah:
You can find Pando in the Fishlake National Forest in central Utah.
Under threat:
While impressive, Pando faces challenges like grazing, habitat loss, and climate change, which are impacting its health and survival.
