Dear Costco Customer Service,
I am writing to formally request a full refund of $839.88 for a recent wine purchase that I believe was made under misleading circumstances.
I recently purchased a package of wine from Costco Wholesale. The pack was shelved alongside a promotional wine package being sold for approximately $80, as well as other bottles typically priced between $5 and $15. The package I purchased was placed directly beside the promotion, but was only labeled with the price per bottle, not the total cost—leading me to believe the entire package would be within the same price range. I had no reason to assume this one package was priced at over $800, especially given the context and surrounding signage.
At checkout, the cashier did not review the price with me or inform me that alcohol purchases are non-refundable. In fact, the cashier asked “are you going to pay with this card” and initiated the tap-to-pay process after I said yes. The payment happened without even mentioning the total amount due, and I unfortunately did not double-check the total myself.
When I attempted to return the package, the manager at the return station informed me that alcohol returns are not allowed under state law and insisted that the fault was entirely mine. While I understand the legal limitations, I do not believe this excuses the misleading display or lack of communication from your staff during checkout.
I have been a loyal Costco member for over ten years, and have always trusted Costco to provide not only value but also transparency and great customer service. In this case, I was let down by both the product presentation and the service process.
I believe this situation highlights an opportunity for Costco to improve. For example, requiring cashiers to confirm prices on alcohol purchases over $50 per bottle or $100 per transaction—and clearly reminding customers that these items are non-returnable—would be a simple but effective way to prevent similar issues in the future.
I respectfully request a full refund of $839.88 and ask that you consider the context and customer experience in this situation. I hope Costco will uphold the trust and goodwill I’ve placed in your brand for over a decade.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your response.
