「I am moving into California and I own several firearms. What are the new-resident registration requirements? You are considered a personal firearm importer as defined by California law. You may bring all of your California-legal firearms with you, but you must report them all to the California Department of Justice within 60 days as required utilizing the New Resident Firearm Ownership Report (BOF 4010A), pdf. You may not bring ammunition feeding devices with a capacity greater than ten rounds, machine guns, or assault weapons into California.」

I have Texas CHL and want to bring CA compliant handguns with me when traveling to California from Texas, can I store the guns unloaded and locked in the box in my car trunk when visiting California? What about ammunition? Can I bring Texas ammo with me when I travelling inside California? Do you have any advice?
Yes, you can legally transport California-compliant handguns in your vehicle while visiting California from Texas, provided you adhere strictly to California’s firearm transportation laws. As a non-resident visiting California, you are generally permitted to bring ammunition into the state for personal use, provided you comply with all applicable laws.
---
Legal Requirements for Transporting Handguns in California
Under California Penal Code §25610, you may transport a handgun in a vehicle if:
You are over 18 years old.
You are a U.S. citizen not prohibited from possessing firearms.
The handgun is unloaded.
The handgun is stored in the vehicle's trunk or in a locked container within the vehicle.
If transporting the firearm outside the vehicle (e.g., to or from the vehicle), it must be in a locked container.
A “locked container” is defined as a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle but does not include the glove compartment or utility compartment.
---
Storing Firearms in Vehicles Without a Trunk
If your vehicle lacks a trunk (e.g., pickup trucks, SUVs), you must store the unloaded handgun in a locked container other than the glove compartment or utility compartment.
Additionally, when leaving a handgun in an unattended vehicle, California law requires that the handgun be secured in one of the following ways:
In a locked trunk.
In a locked container that is placed out of plain view or is permanently affixed to the vehicle's interior.
In a locked toolbox or utility box that is permanently affixed to the bed of a pickup truck or other vehicle that does not have a trunk.
---
Important Considerations
Concealed Carry Permits: California does not recognize concealed carry permits issued by other states, including Texas. Therefore, your Texas CHL (Concealed Handgun License) is not valid in California.
Purpose of Transport: Transporting a handgun in a vehicle, even in compliance with the above storage requirements, is generally permitted only when traveling directly to or from specific destinations such as a shooting range, hunting location, or your residence. Transporting firearms for general purposes, such as self-defense, without a valid California concealed carry permit, is prohibited.
Ammunition Storage: While California law does not require ammunition to be stored separately from the firearm, the firearm must be unloaded. This means no ammunition in the chamber or attached to the firearm in any manner.
---
Recommended Secure Storage Options
For enhanced security and compliance, consider using a dedicated lockbox or safe designed for vehicle use.
When selecting a storage solution, ensure it complies with California's definition of a "locked container" and suits your vehicle's configuration.
---
Additional Resource
For a comprehensive understanding of California's firearm laws, you might consider the following guide:
[California Gun Laws: A Guide to State and Federal Firearm Regulations (12th Edition)](): This eBook provides detailed information on both state and federal firearm laws applicable in California.
Always ensure you are up-to-date with the latest laws and regulations, as firearm laws can change. Consulting with a legal expert or local law enforcement agency before traveling with firearms is advisable.
---
Yes, as a non-resident visiting California, you are generally permitted to bring ammunition into the state for personal use, provided you comply with all applicable laws.
---
Importing Ammunition into California as a Non-Resident
Under California law, while residents are prohibited from bringing ammunition purchased out of state into California unless it is first delivered to a licensed California ammunition vendor, this restriction does not apply to non-residents. Non-residents are allowed to bring ammunition into California for personal use without going through a licensed vendor or submitting to a background check.
---
Important Considerations
Personal Use Only: The imported ammunition must be for your personal use. Selling or transferring ammunition to California residents without going through a licensed vendor is prohibited.
Ammunition Types: Ensure that the ammunition you bring complies with California laws. Certain types of ammunition, such as armor-piercing rounds, tracer ammunition (except for use in shotguns), and incendiary rounds, are prohibited.
Magazine Capacity: California prohibits the importation of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Ensure that any magazines you bring comply with this restriction.
Transportation: When transporting ammunition in your vehicle, store it in a secure container separate from any firearms. While California law does not require ammunition to be stored separately from firearms, it is recommended to prevent any legal complications.
---
Summary
Allowed: Bringing ammunition into California for personal use as a non-resident.
Not Allowed: Selling or transferring ammunition to California residents without going through a licensed vendor.
Ensure Compliance: With California's restrictions on ammunition types and magazine capacities.
Transport Safely: Store ammunition securely and separate from firearms during transportation.
Always stay informed about the latest laws and regulations, as firearm and ammunition laws can change. Consulting with a legal expert or local law enforcement agency before traveling with firearms or ammunition is advisable.
