Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, age 53, was taken to a Washington, D.C., hospital by ambulance on Tuesday after suffering an allergic reaction, according to a spokeswoman.
She is alert and recovering, the spokeswoman said, adding that she was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution.
Noem is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday in New York to discuss the Transportation Security Administration’s work and the rollout of the REAL ID, according to a statement from her office on Tuesday.
Noem’s office oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, one of the groups tasked with carrying out President Trump’s plans to deport millions of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. Recent ICE raids in Los Angeles led to days of protests across the country.
Noem served as governor of South Dakota before joining Trump’s cabinet. She is also a former congresswoman of South Dakota.
