In general, tap water in China is not considered safe to drink and should be avoided. It is recommended to drink bottled water or boiled water while traveling in China. Bottled water is readily available and inexpensive in most locations.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Not safe for drinking:
Tap water in China is not treated to potable standards and may contain contaminants that can cause illness.
Bottled water is readily available:
Purchase bottled water from reputable sources like supermarkets, hotels, or convenience stores. Always check that the bottle seal is intact before consuming.
Boiled water:
If bottled water is not available, boiling tap water thoroughly can make it safe to drink.
Other options:
Carbonated drinks, hot beverages (like tea or coffee), and pasteurized milk are also safe alternatives.
Brushing teeth:
While some recommend using bottled water for brushing teeth, many hotels provide potable water for this purpose. If you are unsure, use bottled water.
Ice:
Avoid beverages with ice unless you are certain it was made with purified water.
