'A pact with the devil': US congresswoman lets rip at Argentina, CFK over China ties
Republican lawmaker María Elvira Salazar uses congressional hearing to slam ties between Buenos Aires and Beijing, declaring the United States can't have an ally that "manufactures and exports Chinese military aircraft and sells them to neighbours."
AUnited States lawmaker has launched an extraordinary attack on Argentina and its government, describing a failed bid to buy Chinese fighter jets as akin to making a "pact with the devil."
US Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar used a hearing in Washington to voice her criticism of Argentina's foreign policy and warn that Buenos Aires may seek to acquire Chinese military aircraft.
"There are two worlds, the free world and the world of slaves, I hope the Argentines stay in the free world," declared Salazar, as she cautioned her peers about ties between Buenos Aires and Bejing.
The Republican lawmaker and chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee used her speech to issue a direct warning to citizens and residents in Argentina.
"I'm going to do it in Spanish so that it is very clear to my Argentine friends," she began.
"Your vice-president [Cristina Fernández de Kirchner] and your president [Alberto Fernández] are making a pact with the devil that can have consequences of biblical proportions. The United States is not going to stand idly by, because you can't have an ally that manufactures and exports Chinese military aircraft and sells them to its neighbours," she said.
According to a press release issued by the US lawmaker, "Fernández de Kirchner is openly considering the possibility of buying Chinese JF-17 fighter jets and manufacturing them in Argentina in Chinese factories specially built for the occasion."
Such a policy, it added, "follows the trend of similar deals the Chinese have made with Venezuela and Bolivia."
Argentina did include in its 2022 budget an allocation of US$664 million to purchase 12 supersonic JF-17 Thunder-Block III aircraft of Chinese origin, but the purchase did not materialise.
At the end of last year, President Alberto Fernández declared that the country "has to allocate its resources to more important things than the purchase of military aircraft today."
In her speech, Salazar also stated that Argentina "has allowed the Chinese Communist Party total control of the operations of a space station, which is approximately the size of 400 football fields and is located in the middle of the Patagonian desert" – a reference to the Far Space Station of the China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General (CLTC) in Bajada del Agrio, Neuquén Province, which is officially dedicated to space research.
"There is no agreement to supervise the base or its surveillance activities, not even with the Argentine government," the Florida legislator alleged.
At the end of her speech, Salazar warned: "There are two worlds, the free world and the world of slaves, I hope the Argentines stay in the free world."
The congresswoman, born in Miami's Little Havana neighbourhood, was a journalist for 35 years before entering politics, mainly in US media aimed at Latinos, such as CNN en Español, Telemundo and Univision.

India's oil deals with Russia dent decades-old dollar dominance
NEW DELHI/LONDON, March 8 (Reuters) - U.S.-led international sanctions on Russia have begun to erode the dollar's decades-old dominance of international oil trade as most deals with India - Russia's top outlet for seaborne crude - have been settled in other currencies.
The dollar's pre-eminence has periodically been called into question and yet it has continued because of the overwhelming advantages of using the most widely-accepted currency for business.
India's oil trade, in response to the turmoil of sanctions and the Ukraine war, provides the strongest evidence so far of a shift into other currencies that could prove lasting.
The country is the world's number three importer of oil and Russia became its leading supplier after Europe shunned Moscow's supplies following its invasion of Ukraine begun in February last year.

Ukraine defence minister: EU's €1bn ammunition plan 'not enough'
EU plans to supply Ukraine with €1 billion ($1.05 billion) in new ammunition received a lukewarm welcome from Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov on Wednesday.
"We need more," said Reznikov, describing the move from the European Union as "not enough." He added that Ukraine needs 1 million rounds of artillery shells, costing around €4 billion.
About 90,000 to 100,000 shells per month would be needed to "be ready to deter enemies" and start counter-offensives, he said, arriving at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Stockholm.
Reznikov was reacting to a proposal from EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to provide the bloc's member countries with an additional €1 billion to incentivize joint purchases and swift ammunition deliveries to Kiev.
The money would come in addition to the €3.6 billion in military aid the EU has provided so far.
"Let's be realistic and pragmatic," Borrell said in Stockholm, commenting on a €4-billion figure previously put forward by EU member Estonia. "Money doesn't come from the sky."
He called to focus on "practical realities" and available resources, instead of "good wishes."
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius made similar comments, stressing that funds were "not the main problem in such matters" but instead ensuring Ukraine got the right practical support.
The difficulties in providing Kiev with needed artillery shells has highlighted production challenges facing the European defence industry.
EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton called on Europe's defence companies to adapt to the high-intensity conflict in Ukraine and move to "a war economy" in media comments ahead of the meeting.
Breton said successfully ramping up defence production in the EU would be essential to allow member states to replenish their own stockpiles and continue supplying Ukraine.
"We need to do this both in parallel," he said.
Helping defence companies access private finance as well as EU funding to expand production capacity to meet increased demand is one of the commissioner's aims.
Breton identified the joint purchase by EU countries of large quantities of 155-millimetre artillery shells for Ukraine as one potential project for such a public-private financing mechanism.
The plan takes inspiration from the European Commission's purchase of Covid-19 vaccines on behalf of the bloc.
Decisions on the EU's further course of action are expected between March 20 and 24 when EU foreign ministers and leaders are scheduled to meet in Brussels.
Meanwhile, Pistorius reaffirmed Germany's commitment to send 18 Leopard 2A6 battle tanks to Ukraine by the end of the month. He said Portugal was sending three tanks.
The tanks would arrive in the country together with trained crews and could then be deployed to the theatre of operations.
Poland already delivered four Leopard-type tanks to Ukraine in February. Ten more are to follow this week.

Fox News cut out Trump saying he might let Russia take over areas of Ukraine as part of peace deal
Tom Porter Mar 8, 2023, 11:58 AM
Fox News edited out remarks by Trump when it replayed an interview with him.
In the part excluded, he said he could have let Russia have parts of Ukraine.
Trump has long drawn criticism for his refusal to criticise Russia.
Fox News cut out comments by former President Donald Trump in which he said he would have considered letting Russia have parts of Ukraine as part of a peace deal between the nations.
In an interview on Fox News host Sean Hannity's radio show on Monday, which is not broadcast by Fox, Trump revealed how he would try and broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in the wake of Russia's invasion last year.
Trump has claimed he can quickly bring an end to the war as he seeks election again in 2024.
In the interview, he boasted of how Russia would not have dared to launch an attack during his presidency, and added: "I could have negotiated. At worst, I could've made a deal to take over something, there are certain areas that are Russian-speaking areas, frankly, but you could've worked a deal."
