Australia said that it would spend billions of dollars to improve ties with neighboring Pacific nations and shore up its defense capabilities.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's second budget since his government was elected in May last year has pledged A$1.9 billion over the next five years to expand engagement with Pacific nations.

Of the total figure, A$1.4 billion will be spent on expanding Australia's defense engagement in the Pacific over the next four years and strengthening law enforcement in the region.

The spending includes A$9 billion for the nuclear-powered submarine program through AUKUS, a trilateral security pact with the United States and Britain, and A$4.1 billion for long-range strike capabilities.

China says Rocket Force joined drills near US base

CCTV reported that the Shandong flotilla had wrapped up a nearly 30-day exercise in the western Pacific region that included unprecedented systematic joint operations with the rocket force and other fighting wings.

The exercise, which took place about 741 km northwest of Guam, involved the Shandong aircraft carrier, a Type 055 destroyer, two Type 052D destroyers, two Type 054A frigates and a Type 901 replenishment ship.

While it is not uncommon for the Chinese navy to carry out drills near Guam, some analysts said disclosing that the rocket force took part indicated a deterrence strategy by the Chinese military.

They said it highlighted the PLA’s enhanced capacity for precision hits on moving surface targets or naval bases beyond the so-called first island chain of defense, which usually refers to the archipelagos running through Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Japan called out by Canada over imports of Russian seafood

Japan imported a record amount of seafood from Russia in 2022. Statistics show imports of Russian marine products rose to 155.2 billion yen last year, eclipsing the previous record of 140.2 billion yen in 2018.

While other governments have largely remained uncritical about it, Canada recently expressed its disappointment over the amount of seafood Japan imported from Russia last year.

A politician with the Conservative Party of Canada has called on the government to pressure Japan to ban imports of Russian crab to demonstrate solidarity among G7 member states. Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng confirmed that the issue had been raised with Japan.

Trade ministry then issued a statement: “We have asked Japan to consider Canada’s sustainable, ethical and premium snow crab to replace its current supply of Russian products.”
