It's difficult to pinpoint a single subscription fee for federal agencies to Springer Nature journals. While some reports indicate that the US government has terminated some contracts, others suggest subscriptions remain active. Springer Nature states they have no material changes in customer spending. However, the USASpending.gov database indicates several agencies have contracts exceeding $20 million with Springer Nature. Ultimately, the specific fee depends on the agency, the journals subscribed to, and the contract terms

For many federal researchers, the decision to cut ties with Springer Nature is not just about dollars and cents—it’s about access to knowledge. Losing institutional access to premier journals hampers their ability to stay abreast of new discoveries, collaborate across institutions, and publish in high-visibility platforms.
One NIH employee, speaking to Nature on condition of anonymity, described the move as a serious blow to scientific freedom. Without these journals, some researchers worry they are being cut off from the very ecosystem that enables progress in their fields. Others fear that decisions about what science is worth supporting are increasingly being shaped by ideology rather than evidence or professional need.
The mass cancellation of Springer Nature subscriptions appears to reflect more than just financial restraint. It suggests a growing tension between scientific institutions and political leadership—particularly when that leadership casts doubt on the legitimacy of established research outlets.

No, a standard coffee mug at the Pentagon does not cost $5,000.
However, there was a 2018 congressional inquiry that revealed the U.S. Air Force was spending $1,300 for each reheatable coffee cup used on KC-10 aircraft and replacing them when the handles broke. Senator Chuck Grassley found the Air Force spent $32,000 replacing just 25 of these cups.
While these reheatable cups were significantly more expensive than typical mugs, they were not priced at $5,000.
For reference, a different source indicates that the Pentagon gift shop, Fort America, sells mugs starting at $10.95.

The USA is consistently a top country for research output, although its growth has been slower than China's in recent years.
The largest proportion of editors at Springer Nature (29%) come from the USA.

NHH Communications Director:
https://www.legistorm.com/person/bio/28 ... Nixon.html
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-02080-1
Trump team says it’s axing some contracts with publishing giant Springer Nature
The action comes as high-ranking US officials criticize leading journals as ‘woke’ and ‘corrupt’.
30 June 2025
Update 01 July 2025
...
The move comes amid criticisms of leading academic journals by high-ranking Trump officials, and will mean that staff members at the affected agencies will no longer be able to easily access the company’s more than 3,000 journals, including the flagship title Nature.
...
When the news team reached out to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) — the world’s largest funder of biomedical science — asking whether its subscriptions were still intact, a spokesperson initially said they were and that use of these resources helps staff members to “promote transparency and replicability in research”.
Hours later, Andrew Nixon, the top spokesperson for the NIH’s parent agency, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), said: “All contracts with Springer Nature are terminated or no longer active. Precious taxpayer dollars should be [sic] not be used on unused subscriptions to junk science.”
...
“When they say, ‘junk science’, it’s not clear what they mean,” says Ivan Oransky, a specialist in academic publishing and co-founder of the media organization Retraction Watch. Given the lack of details justifying the cuts, and the fact that several of Springer Nature’s journals are considered prestigious, Oransky says, “I’m having a hard time taking at face value that this is not political”. It would be unprecedented for a prominent subscriber to make a “sweeping move like this for political reasons”, he adds.
