Menstruation is a unique phenomenon to humans and a few other primate species, such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. These animals experience a similar shedding of the uterine lining, but it is typically less noticeable and occurs at irregular intervals.
Other animals, such as dogs, cats, and horses, experience an estrus cycle, which is a period of heightened sexual receptivity and visible outward signs, such as swelling of the vulva and discharge. However, they do not shed their uterine lining during this time.
Therefore, while some animals may experience a shedding of the uterine lining, it is not menstruation in the same way as humans.
