tps might not be that common to fail/as in defect, but quite common to fail/as slight inaccurate or lost calibration... actually my impression tps are super daily routine for yota engines esp. the proud 20v or jzs, diag/manual adjust/ecu calibrate... very soon ya got so proficient you could do tps jobs eyes closed, darn those precious little thingie...
Actually for most daily grocery getters, load source=air measuring, TPS doesn't relate to tuning maps at all, at least for my link g4x & haltech 1200 duty cycle formula, according to documentation load source = map/maf section... but still is super duper indicative driver's intention, like sly driver suddenly floored it from dead idle - then it'll retard timing for engine safety, while going full speed ahead. Pretty much telling driver's intention, whether now is idle, mild accelerate, dead ahead, fuel cut, anti-lag retard, lil bypass rotational idle, etc etc. And triggers action as such
Lol but there always been quirky engines, those precise ITBS rigs always better mapped completely off TPS, MAP/maf etc only serve as 4d/5d fuel map supplement. Again like yota 20v... or racing 503e etc.
( lol was wanna posting 'if MT retro cars check TPS, or maybe cam distro igniter n other efi sensor thingymajiks, and don't forget check comp as routine precaution', but 2000s+ cars beyond my league )

LOL.
You got be kidding me that honda vvti will affect TPS readings.
We are not talking about a BMW where the vanos motor can do arbitrary adjustments of valve lift. In that case, you do not even need a throttle body.
The BMWs do not have a throttle body to eliminate throttle loss.
The honda vvti has either 2 or 3 profiles on the intake side. Most likely the vvti on a CRV only has 2 profiles.
For throttle control, you need continuous adjustment from idle all the way to WOS. Not one profile for high speed one profile for low speed...
Also note that it is impossible to only rely on MAF to control fuel injection.
When the car just starts, the MAF won't have the correct reading as it needs to warm up to operating temperature.
Fuel injection is controlled only by throttle in an open loop operation. Only when the engine warms up, it switches over to close loop where the MAF and O2 sensor control fuel injection.
With MAF mal-function, the car will switch to open loop and that should set an engine code.
It is possible the engine does not have a MAF as it would have set a code if TPS reading is wrong. A wrong TPS reading should make MAF reading implausible and force the car into open loop and set a code.

Stretched timing chain should set a cam position sensor code. It is hard to believe it leads to major drivability issues before the cam position sensor informs the ECU that engine timing is off.
Honda engine is pretty simple and cheap. Even that, It is hard to imagine they do not monitor cam position carefully to ensure the timing is good by the ECU.

I did assume your car has no MAF. It probably only have an intake temperature sensors.
Assuming your ECU is function normally, the only other reason I can think of that cause the TPS to go down when you press the gas pedal (without setting a check engine code) is stability control. That is pretty unlikely, though. You can turn off VSA and see if you can reproduce the loss power problem. I suppose your car has a VSA button.
Do you know if the car has drive-by-wire or it actually has a mechanical cable that pulls the throttle?
If it is a mechanical cable, then it rules out many possibilities. There is then a 90% chance you have a bad TP sensor.

Is your car 4 speed or 5 speed? Honda has some poorly made 5 speed transmission early 2004.
There original design of the H5 transmission uses a 3 shaft design that is a disaster.
Honda has many transmission problems early 2000 as they do not want to pay patent fees for planetary gear and ended up designing their own transmissions. It took them awhile to stabilize their design, which is actually quite efficient.
That being said, a transmission problem can not explain the inconsistent TPS reading and is probably unrelated to your current problem.
